Visited an irrigation system that the community of Chingali, Malawi put together with World Vision. The crops on the right shows what happens when you're able to provide water to your garden, compared to the desolate and dry conditions on the left. When we returned to our truck to head off to another site, our World Vision guide ever so politely said, "Oh, by the way I forgot to tell you about the crocs. There are many many in that river." "Oh," I said. "Oh." And I left it at that. Sometimes it's better not to know everything.

Hi Mrs. White! We are really enjoying your blog posts here in the 5/6 classroom! This one really freaked us out. Weren't you terrified to learn there were crocs in the nearby river?

Not really to tell you the truth. All part of the experience. I just laugh about it now - and try not to think about what could have happened. I researched how to survive a croc attack when I wrote a scene in my second book. Some say to cover the croc's eyes and he thinks he's asleep and then doesn't bother you. Others say to try to keep the mouth closed because a croc has strong mouth muscles to chomp down on its prey but weak mouth muscles to open up its mouth - honest! Also heard it you have a big stick you can push it into it's mouth and press on a flap in the back of its throat and the water rushes in and the croc drowns. When I told a local man this during our trip, he replied, "Oh dear, but that would kill the croc." Guess some people love their crocs there!
